Permanent Role – Dublin City Centre


The technical writer’s role is to produce high quality product documentation for the end user. You will own the entire documentation production process; from creating doc templates and styles guides, through writing the content, having it reviewed, administering the release cycle, versioning, maintenance and carrying out the training to both our staff and to our clients.

You will enhance product documentation, ensuring quality, usability, completeness and timely delivery. You will use and explore the product to understand how it works, liaise with our savvy developers and product owners on new features to be documented, identify areas for improvement in the existing documentation and lend your expertise in proofreading and editing various other kinds of written material.

You will be responsible for delivering Training on all technical aspects and components that make up the company solution.


Main Responsibilities:
• Maintain, update and enhance existing documentation, and create new documentation for company products. This includes User Guides, Installation Guides, Technical Environment Guidelines, Release Notes and customer-specific supplements among others
• Write with clarity, simplicity and flair
• Create and use a style guide and standard templates.
Create diagrams, take screenshots and perform basic image editing.
• Use various tools such as Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat.
Collaborate with members of various departments (such as solution architects, business analysts and software engineers) to update existing documentation and to produce new documents.
• Edit and format documents by other staff members to ensure that the material follows the style guide.
• Follow stringent version-control procedures and keep an accurate record of changes made to documents.
• Deliver training to both internal staff, contractors and clients as required.

Required Skills:
• 3-4 years of experience in writing software product documentation.
• Experience in giving training to both internal staff and clients
• You need to be proficient in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat
• More important is your ability to study and understand new software and concepts quickly and then explain them to users in clear English that is easy to read
• Ability to explain sophisticated product functionality in clear and simplified English.
• Experience with all aspects of the software development life cycle.

Job Description:
The technical writer’s purpose is to produce high quality product documentation for the end user. You need to see the world from the end user’s viewpoint and provide clear instructions, with simple to follow steps and examples that explain how to use each of the features of our products. You will own the entire documentation production process; from creating doc templates and styles guides, through writing the content, having it reviewed, and administering the release cycle, versioning and maintenance.
You will enhance product documentation, ensuring quality, usability, completeness, and timely delivery. You will use and explore the products to understand how they work, liaise with our savvy developers and product owners on new features to be documented, identify areas for improvement in the existing documentation, and lend your expertise in proofreading and editing various other kinds of written material.



Skill Set:
Candidates should have the following background:
• 3-4 years experience writing software product documentation.
• Formal education in a writing programme is ideal but not necessary. Good writing experience may substitute for formal training.
• You have at least a bachelor’s degree in English, communications, new media or information technology.
• You’ll need to use Framemaker, Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat (or similar) and Adobe Photoshop.
• An understanding of the life insurance industry is helpful but not necessary. More important is your ability to study and understand new software and concepts quickly—and then explain them to beginners in clear English that is pleasant and easy to read.
• Ability to structure your own time, prioritise and manage workload efficiently (experience in an Agile/JIRA managed environment is a bonus)
• Ability to explain sophisticated product functionality in clear, simple language.
• Experience with all aspects of the software development life cycle.

Responsibilities:

This is a 6 month Fixed Term Contract with Immediate start.
• The main purpose of this role is to design quality, learning content for multiple platforms.
• Contribute to the creative process as a member of the design team, and as a member of the Product team
• Work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to design products
• Design quality learning solutions that adhere to graphic design principles


Functional:
• Work with external layout teams to create high quality educational content
• Work with all teams involved in product design, development, and product promotion
• Create style guides, templates, sample documents and prototypes as required
• Work with Stylesheets
• Template setting
• Apply QA processes to all stages of graphic development
• Deliver quality work within scheduled timeframes
• Input to Scheduling


QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

Must Have (essentials)

• 3rd level qualifications in Design
• Strong design /DTP skills (InDesign, Quark Xpress, Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, Flash
• Experienced in pre-press protocols, (Enfocus Pitstop)
• An excellent understanding of both the design and print processes.
• Interest and passion for Irish Education

Nice to Have (advantageous but not essential)
• Product innovation
• Experience with HTML5 or Flash
