Virtualisation Engineer Job Description
The Virtualisation Systems Engineer is responsible for vSphere/VMware infrastructure design and on-going development, advanced systems performance tuning, capacity planning and licensing management. As part of his role, the systems engineer will also install, configure, maintain, and upgrade Microsoft Windows Server operating systems and applications
Role/Responsibilities
Design, implement and manage virtualized infrastructure, specifically ESX 5.0 or later and vSphere /VMware and optimize system performance working with applications, network, SAN/NAS storage, database and server technology.
Performance tuning, capacity planning and troubleshooting of VMware infrastructure ensuring that systems and data are operational (24x7 e-commerce environment)
Backup and restore of the virtual infrastructure.
Develop and drive VMware environment integrity and security initiatives
Develop maintenance policies and procedures for VMware infrastructure and systems.
Collaborate on complex deployments and support resolutions with systems engineers, operational support staff and engineering development staff
Assist in the design, installation, implementation and management of Microsoft Active Directory Domain Services (Windows 2008 R2), Microsoft Exchange and/or services: clustering, Identity & access management, Certificate Services, SCCM, SCOM, etc.
Able to diagnose, isolate, troubleshoot, and solves unusual or highly technical problems under pressure.
Perform troubleshooting and repair work at a hardware and software level
Provide assistance with automation of software installation processes.
Key Requirements:
BS or BA degree, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent education
Minimum 5 years experience of Virtualisation (VMware, HyperV) platforms with implementation and management experience in 24x7 environments
Advanced knowledge of Windows server/services (Active Directory, Exchange, WSUS, SCCM)
Proficiency with SAN technologies IBM SAN hardware preferable
Experience in scripting languages such as Shell, Perl, Python, PowerShell, PowerCLI
Strong security awareness with experience in hardening and securing platforms.
Experience with networking and network appliances, switches, firewalls, and load balancers a plus
Ability to work as part of a team, accepting guidance and direction from Program Owners, Project Manager, Directors, and other key organisational leadership
Effectively communicate complex ideas and possess problem solving techniques
Strong customer focus is required.
Good English verbal and written communication skills
VMWare certification VCP a plus
Other certifications (Microsoft MCSE, CISSP, etc.) a plus
